Fire Danger is Unusually High Right Now

The first Cave Creek fire burned more than 1,500 acres. Then another major fire erupted two weeks later. Why is this happening, and is there anything you can do to control the threat to your family, pets and property?

This past winter and early spring was unusually wet, causing the growth of weeds and desert plants to explode. Then it all dried out and is now fuel for a fire that can start any number of ways: an overheated weed whacker; a spark from a tool or a chain dragging from a vehicle; a cigarette butt carelessly tossed.

Make sure that your property is cleared of weeds and dry brush, particularly of globe chamomile (also called stinknet) which grows profusely. Create a wide weed-free barrier around your house so that if a fire does break out nearby, you stand a better chance of escaping, and minimizing damage to your home.
